Virgin media - lowest common IQ?

I wanted to change some aspects of my Virgin Media account. So I phoned them.

It appeared I would have to wait up to 30 minutes to talk to a human being. Busy time for them apparently, 7am.

So I emailed explaining the delay situation and asking them to call me. I got a reply!

The reply said they would be delighted to assist me (top marks!) and suggesting I phone the number that I had encountered the 30 minute delay on (no marks!).

So my question is, which is the idiot? A piece of software designed by a cretin to respond to emails or just a cretin responding to emails?

Or maybe it's me. I eventually made the changes on-line. Which I guess is what I should have done in the first place.

Hooray for www.booking.com!

As my wives and daughters will confirm, I am not a detail man. So it would have surprised no-one (except me) to learn that I managed to book two holidays in the same month, with dates overlapping.

We are going to Canada in September and Jordan in October. I booked the Jordan hotel  dates correctly but managed to transpose the month to September. no problem - one can go back to booking.com and cancel/change bookings at will. Except that one of the Jordan hotels was a 'special deal' and could not be changed!

In a panic, I phoned Booking. Maybe the hotel would view kindly a request to move dates if it came from a source of considerable business instead of just another incompetent holidaymaker.

They were brilliant! I spoke to them on Sunday (Freephone number!) and they contacted the hotel as I held on. Unfortunately the person with the POWER was not in, so the helpful lady dealing with my problem said leave it with her and she would talk to them on Monday when said person of POWER would be around.

About 11am on Monday I got a call - the hotel had agreed to move the booking to October!

Guess who I'll be booking all my hotels with from now on?

Has the world gone mad?

Yes.

Elderly relative died and left behind a selection of walking sticks. No good to me so what to do?

Idea! Give them to the local charity shop so some poor old soul(s) with mobility problems can get a cheap solution.

The charity shop was unable to accept my donation. The reason quoted? Health & Safety!

So sorry to tell you, mobility challenged people of Berkshire; you will just have to continue stumbling, falling over and breaking bones in the name of H&S!!

Hello Waterstones, do you really want my business?

Unbelievably, I cannot get a telephone number for my local Waterstones from the website!

So in person or online is the only way to do business with them; I can't even check with my local store to see if they have the books I want.

No wonder bookshops are having a hard time!

Dial a Flight comes up trumps!

I have a strange feeling of deja vu. I'm convinced I have written this post already, but I can't find it! Senility again, I guess. Anyway ...

Spotted a remarkable offer for a trip to Dubai in my copy of The Week (recommended reading if you can't be bothered wading through the dross in the newspapers). So remarkable was it we decided to check the company (Dial a Flight) on TripAdvisor.

Reviews were mixed ranging from "disastrous, never again" to "used them for ten years and they are great". With some trepidation and because the offer was so good, we decided to take a chance.

The whole experience was excellent. Our contact, Cameron, was efficient, helpful and seemed genuinely interested in providing a great service. The trip went smoothly from start to finish and was probably the best value for money of any I have had.

So, if you want a good deal on your next holiday/business trip, I suggest you check out Dial a Flight on 020 7464 1045. Ask for Cameron and mention my name ('cos I promised him I'd spread the word and, who knows, he might get me an even better deal next time!)

DISCLAIMER!! This was my first and so far only experience of Dial a Flight. So it may have been a fluke and I take no responsibility for the outcome of any dealings you may have with Cameron or the company!

Congestion charge scam

Oh boy! I'll think twice before I sneer at gullible people getting caught by obvious scams in future. (But only momentarily, obviously.)

Here's the story:

I was up in London early - before the congestion charge kicked in - and parked my car in a nice gagrage paid for by my client.

Unfortunately I headed back before the congestion charge period ended. No problem, so I have to pay. When I got back home I Googled 'London Congestion Charge' and up popped "Pay your congestion charge". Click and I'm in to the official looking site.

Hell's teeth! They've upped the charge to £15! (It still didn't click, despite having had a conversation about having to pay £8 and it being pointed out that the fee was now £10.) Blithely ignorant and stupid I proceeded to enter all my details and cough up £15.

I was on the sign-out screen before I saw a tiny footnote advising me that london-congestion.co.uk is nothing to do with Transport for London.

So beware; don't be a fool like me, make sure you are on the Transport for London site before you start shelling out.

Oh, and the charge is £10.

i-tailor - the saga continues

Just in case you think it is only me, here are a couple of recent comments on the rip-off merchants:

1/3/13 at 10:31am

Stay away from this company they are a rip off, £35 for a shirt (invoice when it arrived said £14.99), did not fit at all, they claimed it was my measurements but my friend had the same issue, but his measurements came from one of his existing shirts not made by them. My only guess is they dont like to use too much material. If you still choose to go ahead give yourselves plenty of ectra inches

Funny - my problem exactly, even to them claiming it was all my fault! BTW, the shirt I got was probably worth £14.99 - more likely £3 in Tesco.

15/1/2013

I recently purchased 2 women's shirts from itailor and I was a bit nervous and the fit but understood that if I provided the wrong measurements that it would be my fault.
I was pleased with the design when the shirts arrived but when I tried them on I was very disappointed as they were way too big.
At first I assumed that I must have measured up incorrectly but luckily I kept a copy of the measurements from the order so I measured the shirts and compared.
I noticed that the chest, waist and hips were 2 inches bigger than ordered. The only reason I used this site was because I struggle to find shirts to fit me so I was very annoyed that they didn't even use my measurements.
I contacted itailor and explained the situation - they clearly didn't believe me and asked me to take pictures of the measurements - very inconvenient but I did this and then I received the following response.

As stated in our terms and conditions, we do add 2-7 inches (depending on your submitted measurements and fit selection) to the chest waist and hip areas as ease allowance per standard tailoring protocol.

I couldn't believe that they were serious, 2-7 inches!! How it that tailored?!

Funnily enough they have stopped responding to me now.

They did not say anything to me about adding inches - I wish they had, then the bloody shirts might have fitted! They did stop responding to my emails though. Their modus operandi (operandus?) clearly continues.

If you are ever tempted to respond to their emails, check this Money Saving Expert link first for the latest updates (10 pages at present) You call yourseves tailors?

Save the whale (and other species)

Why?

Now I have nothing against whales, tigers, seals etc. But the fact that they are endangered (or are seals not endangered but we don't want nasty Canadians clubbing them?) ... I'll forget the seals and concentrate on the endangered wildlife.

As you are doubtless aware, species have been facing extinction, and becoming extinct, since forever. It's what happens when habitats change or predators become too numerous. Generally something else appears to fill the vacant slot. Like dinosaurs and (eventually) humans.

So while it may be a shame that we won't have cuddly whales or enormous tigers at some point in the near future it is not per se something to be concerned about. So, if you want to save the ....... (fill in the blank), that's fine by me. But if you want my support, you will have to come up with a reason beyond "Isn't it terrible?"

BTW, I do realise that predators who wipe out their natural prey can find themselves in deep trouble. And maybe we humans will find ourselves wishing we had saved the whales when the krill become intelligent, take over the world and wipe us out. But that may be no bad thing and, rest assured, the planet will survive and prosper.

Which brings me to climate change (once known as global warming). Clearly we are going to do nothing substantive about this as nobody can agree what, when and how much needs to be done. So the problem will sort itself out, perhaps but probably not at the expense of the human race. But that may be no bad thing and, rest assured, the planet will survive and prosper.

Better stop now, I'm beginning to repeat myself.
